One of Lake County's best kept secrets, King's Ridge is an 18-hole beauty by Clifton, Ezell & Clifton. Water is found on just one hole, the 156-yard par-3 fourth. Located on US Highway 27 in Clermont, the course is easily reached from Kissimmee and other Orlando areas. Opened in 1990, this championship layout was designed by Clifton, Ezell & Clifton around century-old oak trees, lush vegetation, and abundant wildlife. The challenging course borders East Lake Toho and features water on 16 holes, gently rolling fairways, multi-tiered tees, and large greens that are consistent and true. A unique feature of the club is a permanent display of golf equipment and memorabilia in their Langley Golf Museum, a private collection of more than 1,000 rare and antique golf items. The course is located just a five-iron's distance from its equally challenging sister course, Remington. Both are located in Kissimmee, a 15-20 minute drive east of most area hotels and 12 to 13 easy miles south of Orlando Int'l Airport. The Legends is an artfully-designed layout by Clifton, Ezell & Clifton, situated just 35 minutes west of Orlando in Clermont right on US Hwy. 27. Carved from former citrus groves, the course boasts a multitude of rolling fairways and dramatic elevation changes, bordered by perimeter mounding - all leading to large, undulating, well-bunkered greens. Although water is found on just six holes, there are a number of tantalizing, challenging doglegs. The course is most memorable for its extremely memorable par three's. The visually stunning layout features 18 distinctly different holes, all carved out of the Wekiva River Basin. The par 3's and 4's are extremely challenging while the par 5's give the player an opportunity for that illusive birdie and seldom-achieved eagle. Built in 1926, Mission Inn's El Campeon, "The Champion," is one of the south's oldest and most historical, prestigious golf courses. Architect Captain Charles Clarke of Troon, Scotland, blended unusual elevation changes of more than 85 feet with features of traditional golf design. Rolling fairways (some dramatic), undulating greens and well-placed berms, bunkers and sandy waste areas, as well as water on 11 holes, all only begin to characterize the aura of El Campeon. Just rated 4 stars by Golf Digest's "Best Places To Play, 2008/2009," a highly awarded distinction amongst pier Central Florida golf courses. You can't miss the Spanish-style resort inn/ hotel in the background, adjacent to several course holes. 'Championship Golf' at Mission Inn... always a challenge, always inviting, and always memorable. An easy 35-40 minute drive from most Orlando areas, accessible to all major highways (Florida Turnpike and US Hwy. 27) but most importantly, always well worth the drive!

Mission Inn's Las Colinas ("The Hills") was built in 1992 and designed by former PGA Tour player and TV commentator, Gary Koch. Just rated 4 stars by Golf Digest's "Best Places To Play, 2008/2009" and nominated as Golf Digest's 1992 "Best New Resort Course," Las Colinas offers quite a different challenge from El Campeon. Its wide open fairways and gently rolling hills create an inland links design that contrasts and at the same time, compliments its older sister course. Greens are large and undulating, while the course's classic old architecture style demands proper shot placement. Water can be found on 14 holes and again, large berms are found to framework numerous fairways. Discover nature in its natural habitat along with abundant wildlife where this championship layout was carved out of yesteryear's orange groves. Watch out for the treacherous signature par-five, 12th hole (nicknamed "Alligator Alley")!

Mystic Dunes was designed by PGA Tour Professional and NBC golf analyst Gary Koch, opened in Fall 2001. As a par 71, 7012-yard course, Mystic Dunes' layout is truly unique to Orlando. The "low-country" front nine weaves its way through majestic oaks and pine trees, similar to those courses in the Carolinas, meandering through marsh and wetlands. From the links-style back nine with its rolling fairways, bump-and-run shots around the greens and quick putting surfaces, golfers feel reminiscent of the truly greatest courses of the British Isles. The course challenges golfers to play it smart off the tee, deliver solid iron shots into the greens, and putt on always- consistent greens. Designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II, The Tradition is the newest of the three courses at Reunion Resort. The two Jacks took advantage of naturally undulating terrain when designing this outstanding layout. Arnold Palmer's 6916-yard Legacy course at Reunion Resort is routed over surprisingly hilly "roller coaster-like" terrain. The natural flow of the land provides dramatic elevation changes and creates a number of "risk/reward" shots for the gutsy player. Much like Mr. Palmer himself, you can "go for broke" on numerous occasions. In particular, the 349-yard, par-four 13th is vintage Palmer. It just begs for a heroic tee shot and - if pulled off -- a legitimate chance for eagle or birdie.

The Independence course was the first of the Reunion Resort courses to open. It was also Tom Watson's first Signature design in Florida. The Independence offers a windswept, native appearance framed by 15 varieties of native grasses, azaleas, hibiscus, camellias, and other foliage. Says Watson; "Golf attracts more players than any other outdoor sport. No doubt there are almost as many reasons for this as there are players, but one reason is certainly shared by all. It's the simple pleasure of being on a beautiful course." While The Independence is certainly beautiful, it's equally challenging. Watson's thoughtful use of bunkers -- at least one on each hole -- will make you think your way around. Do not miss a chance to play The Independence course at Reunion Resort.

Rated by Golf Digest as the Best New Course in 1994 and one of the Top 50 Courses in Florida by The Florida Golfer in 1999, this Ted McAnlis layout is a truly diverse test of golf. Shot positioning is crucial as water and/or wetlands can be found on 16 holes; however, the fairways had been widened in 2004 to create more fair and forgiving landing areas. The front nine is not encumbered by homes, but water features do abound. The back nine plays through a more residential area, offering more generous fairways. Open January 2006, the Cypress Course at Stonegate (formerly Poinciana) has been skillfully redesigned by Clifton, Ezell & Clifton, being fabricated into a more challenging layout than its predecessor. Fairways are gently rolling and flanked by undisturbed century-old cypress trees; all the greens have been expanded in size to feature undulations acceptable for much faster roll - some greens have now been bulk-headed for a truly spectacular visual affect. Cart paths now run the length of the course, tee to green, and water comes into play on 13 holes. Don't expect to recognize many of the new holes as this picturesque redesign will have you questioning your ability to remember what used to be! The Cypress is a unique addition to this terrific golf facility and creates a great 36-hole combination with its sister course, the Oaks. Play them both - you won't be disappointed.

As the focal point of the new community at Solivita, Stonegate Golf Club is a great example of how a course can be enjoyable for players of all ages and abilities. Designer Ron Garl laid the course out at over 7000 yards from the back tees for the "big hitters," but also ingeniously mapped out three more forgiving sets of tees. With water on eight holes and free-forming collars around the greens, there's a definite emphasis on the short game. After all, golf's most famous adage is "drive for show and putt for dough." Always meticulously groomed with rolling, tree-lined fairways, natural vegetation and wetlands, and a habitat to the native wildlife, what's not to like?! Whether playing 18 or 36 holes with its sister course, The Cypress, you'll treasure the memory of these two fine courses. Stoneybrook is an exceptional showcase of undulating greens and naturally tree-lined, rolling fairways where golfers are required to play strategic carries over preserved wetlands and waterways. This challenging and unique course is designed by Clifton, Ezell & Clifton where each hole will play out a strategy of its own; some place a premium on the tee shot while others demand an exacting approach. A must-play while in Central Florida, Timacuan is a stunning 6,900-yard championship course located in Lake Mary, 15 minutes north of downtown Orlando. Designed originally by Ron Garl in 1987 and totally renovated with a new look and feel by Bobby Weed in 1996, the course features two very distinct nines. The front nine resembles a Scottish links layout with rolling fairways (some dramatic) bordered by sandy waste areas and deep pot bunkers; water on just 3 holes. The back has the feel of the finest Carolina pineland courses with abundant wildlife and water almost everywhere in sight. Add outstanding club facilities, a first-class staff and attention to customer service, and you quickly understand why Timacuan is so great and so highly recommended.

This Joe Lee track is a classic Central Florida design with tight fairways, water on 13 holes, and well-trapped greens. The elevated greens are tough to hit and full of tricky undulations, which make it difficult to get it "up and down." Although the course is set within the Ekana community, you'll forget there are homes nearby as you play through a natural landscape of environmentally protected wetlands. Now managed and owned by The Golf Group, a consortium of 6 local golf courses, Twin Rivers is located in Oviedo, just 30 minutes northeast of downtown.

Before you tee it up, keep in mind that to card a great score you'll have to survive the punishing final four holes.

Wekiva Golf Club, located just 15 minutes west of I-4 in Longwood, has recently seen a well needed refurbishment. Architect Ron Garl and his design firm have redone all of the greens, green surrounds, and green side bunkering. The greens have been re-surfaced with TifEagle Bermuda and are in excellent condition; rolling smooth and fast. In addition, Garl has added new tees to a number of holes and the course now plays approximately 400 yards longer from the tips. Wekiva is truly a great test for golfers of all levels; a course that you will return to year after year.

This private country club is located in the prestigious community of Windermere, 15 minutes from International Drive and most area hotels. This heavily bunkered layout is perfectly maintained and bordered by natural wetland areas and ponds, featuring gently rolling fairways and water that borders on 13 holes. The majestic Butler Chain of Lakes serves as a memorable backdrop. Designed by Ward Northrup in 1986, all 18 greens were rebuilt during the summer of 1999 and the members love to brag about their 'true rolling greens.' Complementing the course is a beautiful clubhouse with a sports bar and grille. Various tee time restrictions apply due to membership.

Although it doesn't always get the recognition it deserves with all the new courses in town, Zellwood remains a popular track on the north side of Orlando in Apopka.
